PACCAR to Expand Operations, Bring New Job Opportunities

International automotive company PACCAR is set to expand its local manufacturing facility by 50 thousand square feet in order to expand their capabilities. They anticipate that this project will allow them to create a hundred more local jobs by 2026. They are investing nearly $210 million into the expansion. Construction on the site is planned to commence this December. The MDA, Lowndes County, TVA, and 4-County Electric are also providing support for this massive project.

Huber Breaks Ground on New Lumber Plant

Construction for a new $418 million strand board lumber plant in Noxubee County is slated to begin in early 2024.

Huber Engineered Woods recently broke ground on a new $418 million strand board lumber plant in Noxubee County; if all goes as planned, construction on the facility will begin in early 2024 and be completed by the end of the following year.

“We started looking at this site in 2022,” CEO Brian Carlson said. “We also looked primarily in Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas and looked at multiple sites. We ultimately identified Noxubee County as the best in terms of all the criteria we needed, such as road infrastructure, labor force availability and the lumber we needed to supply the plant. So a really good combination of factors led us to Noxubee County.”

“This new business for Noxubee County will bring a benefit for a long time,” Noxubee BOS President Coleman said. “… When the plant opens in 2026, People won’t have to go very far to find a good job.”

FORGEing Ahead!

The FORGE Foundation has announced this year’s FORGE Your Path Career Expo, to take place at EMCC from October 25th from 7:30AM to 3 PM. Eighth graders from 28 regional schools of all sorts will have the opportunity to see and climb into all sorts of construction machinery and the like, as well as get hands-on time with related materials and techniques. There will also be a Business After Hours reception event the night before, on Tuesday, Oct 24th, which is open to all comers.

Katie McCrary, a FORGE founding board member from McCrary-West Construction spoke about the event: “This expo is a great opportunity for students to learn how to link their current educational outlook to a skilled trade. We want students to learn not only how they can enter these fields but thrive and advance as experts and leaders in these industries. We want to showcase our community as pioneers in developing a workforce pipeline beginning in K-12 and continuing through trade school, community college, or 4-year programs.”

Beloved BBQ Joint Changing Hands, Gets New Name

Jason Brock announces that he has officially completed the purchase of the former Bob Roberts BBQ, 599 W. Lowndes Drive, and renamed it to Davey Jay’s BBQ. His plan is to continue offering basically the same menu that prior owner Bob Wiygul did: “We’re probably just gonna maintain the status quo until I get in here and kind of get my feet set a little more and see how things are going,” Brock said. “I don’t really have any intentions on changing a whole lot. I’m a cook at heart myself, so I’ll have little menu specials and tweaks, but for the most part, our menu will stay fairly the same as what it was.” He plans to add some items to the menu while keeping much of it intact.

WEST POINT

Speaking of well-known eateries, Statkville’s TBT Butcher Shop and Seafood Market is getting ready to open a new location in West Point – in the former Hoover’s Bakery location at 58 Hwy. 45 N. They plan to offer all of your old favorites, plus a little extra; they’re just waiting on the final inspection to be done, and may be open as soon as Friday or Saturday. “Once we get the kitchen up and running and staffed and everybody’s comfortable, then we’ll open up for dinner,” owner Artie Sutherland said. “The dinner menu will feature some of our steamed products and seafood and all the fun stuff. It’ll be a little higher end for dinner.” Planned hours: Mon~Sat 10am to 8pm.

CALEDONIA

And now for…More good food! 740 Coffee Company, located at 737 Main St., is in the same boat, just waiting on a final inspection before they can open their doors. Owner James White says that they have been working hard all Summer to get the place in tip-top condition. Please keep an eye out for them!

Local Beverage Manufacturer Expanding

Quality Beverage, a maker of private-label beverage concentrates, sweeteners, etc used by the food & beverag3e industry, has announced that it plane to begin production on a new 50,000-sq ft facility here in Lowndes County, thus expanding its local operations. They hope to be open by January 2025; the facility will house R&D, manufacturing, and distribution ops. They anticipate the creation of at least thirty new jobs once all is said and done.

Business is Booming at Local Airport

Columbus-Lowndes County Airport (off of Hwy 69) reports that they have seen a 200% jump in Summertime air traffic over this same time just as couple of years ago. This is, in large part, thanks to Fixed Base Operator Dan Dunston and his crew: “A lot of that is just because somebody is here to provide good service when people fly in,” he said. “We’re starting to get a lot of repeat customers. . . They’re flying coast-to-coast and our airport, like (Golden Triangle Regional Airport), is right underneath a major airway,” he went on to say. “There’s less traffic here (compared to GTRA), so it’s easy to get in and out of.”

In order to help build upon that success, officials are seeking nearly $2 million in FAA grant funding, to be used to repave the 20-year-old runway at the airport.

Their clients include a broad variety of pilots – everything from medical aircraft to forestry to private fliers. Also, they are an official FAA testing site, Duston said: “As of April, pilots and student pilots who need to take a written FAA knowledge exam can take it here. That’s great for us, because the next closest (testing area) is 100 miles away. Anybody at (Raspet Flight Research Laboratory at Mississippi State University) or in law enforcement can come here to take drone tests, for example.”

Airbus Celebrates Twenty Years in Columbus

Airbus Helicopters, Inc. recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its industrial site in Columbus. They held a celebration and spoke about their history, and marked the occasion with the installation of a display model of their H125 aircraft near the entrance. “We are an entrepreneurial business at heart,” says Johannes Dienemann, Vice President, Industry and Civil Programs at the facility. “Many of our employees have stories of working their way up into leadership roles.”

They cited a number of factors as to why they placed a factory here, so far from their HQ in Plano, TX: that the GTR tri-city area has plenty of military veterans eager for work, the readiness of the government to encourage industry and the availability of technical expertise from local residents. The copters they produce “…are flying and protecting our nation,” says Dienemann.

They began with just seven workers here and have since expanded to over three hundred. Over the years, the region has since gained a number of other thriving industrial concerns – thanks, in part, to Airbus’ being willing to take a chance on our area.

Bulley’s Lodge and Starbucks Expanding Their Operations

Developer Mark Castleberry reports that he has been building out a new Starbucks location in the Triangle Crossing Shopping Center at 601 Hwy. 12 W. It is anticipated to be ready to open next year.

Professional cleaning service The Clean Team has moved to the big city! Originally based out of Ackerman, owner Ramae Allen said that they are moving their HQ to 506 Academy Rd in Starkville in order to accommodate the large userbase they have already established there: “The business is just growing,” Allen said. “We started off with four or five clients in Starkville to maybe even 50 or 60 clients now.”

WEST POINT

Mitch Bulley, owner of Bulley’s Lodge in Caledonia, is opening his second store. Like the current shop, they will offer premium meats and seafood, among other items. However, being in a larger town will also allow him to offer more seating space for patrons, as well as a lunch menu with offerings such as deli sandwiches and even steaks cooked to order. They will be opening next Thursday, Sept 28 in the old Farmhouse Market building at 3229 E. Church Hill Road: “[The prior owners] felt like I was a good choice to make an offer because they had heard good things about what we did in Caledonia and the business,” Bulley said. “The building has a lot of potential, and they wanted somebody who could maximize that and bring some really good things into their community.”

Hours will be Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at first; once they’re all settled in and fully staffed, he plans to be open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Owner Chad Clardy has announced that his counseling operation has moved to a new location right next to the Columbus Packet, at 423 College St. Patients have already begun coming in: “Columbus just kind of fell into our laps and it worked out great,” Clardy said. “We’re going to have an all-inclusive access to our care facilities.” They offer general counseling services and therapy to those in need.

Microtek/Ecolab Medical Building Sells

Realtor Royce Hudspeth has announced that the former Microtek Medical facilities at 602 Lehmberg Road has been sold to an out-of-state buyer: “[H]e is not ready to discuss any details as to what is intended with the building,” Hudspeth said. “… I will say they’re not an end-user (they won’t operate the facility). They would be willing to repurpose (it), perhaps.” “(Selling it) was just a matter of timing,” he went on to say. “I will say that the increased activity from some of the things that are happening in West Lowndes County with the aluminum plant and some of the other industries are very positive.”

GTD LINK COO Meryl Fisackerly spoke of the desire for big industry to secure in-town warehouses and other buildings as part of their growth: “We’ve seen companies and industries wanting to locate in the area, just given recent announcements and recent economic growth,” she said. “What we’re seeing is these are smaller companies that might do services for these other industries or they might be warehousing. It’s twofold when the bigger industry locates, and then we see these smaller ones wanting to locate close to them.”

Strombolis and Flowers and Fashion, Oh My!

STARKVILLE

Stromboli’s, a beloved Italian joint located at 408 University Drive, closed up their storefront back in April so that the owners could retire; however, they are still offering catering services and the occasional “pop-up” day at the restaurant thanks in part to their daughter, Stella Turman. She and her family have been looking into re-opening on an ongoing basis, but the plans have not yet been finalized. Please check their FaceBook page for info on days when their tasty food will be available.

The University Florist, 100 Lee Blvd., is preparing to move to a new location: the A.B. McKay Food Research and Enology Lab located at 205 Technology Blvd. They do not yet have a definite moving date, but they plan to do so soon, so get your flowers from the current on-campus shop while you still can! Even at the new location, they will still be glad to deliver their products to anywhere on campus for free, in addition to keeping a stock in the university’s MAFES Sales Store.

WEST POINT

Women’s fashion store Southern Dane Boutique opened at 26346 W. Main St. in mid-August, per owner Jessi Morton. The shop began as an online business, and it soon got so much attention that the need for a physical store was clear. She helped over a hundred customers on opening day alone: “We had so much traffic come through that we actually sold almost all of our inventory,” she said. “It just feels amazing and it was such a relief now that we are finally (open).”

COLUMBUS

The Road Side Ranch House at 807 Alabama St. re-opened mid-August, having had some renovations and an increased focus on area sporting events – Indeed, they have installed four large-screen TVs so that patrons can catch MSU games in comfort. Co-owner Tracy Wilson said, “People probably get tired of just sitting at home alone during the game. Now, those people can come to the restaurant, sit down and enjoy your food while drinking and watching the game.”

Juva Juice, 502 18th Ave. N., is under new management: it has been sold to West Point resident Stance Henderson. The prior owner was Ryan Munson of Munson & Bros.
