Trustmark Building Purchased, Undergoing Renovation

PRESS RELEASE —

Local company Dutch Health Services recently purchased the old Trustmark building on the corner of Bluecutt & Hwy 45. They have announced their plans to remodel the bottom floor into a family medical clinic and an independent pharmacy that will allow for drive-thru, walk-in, and local delivery service. The upper two floors of the structure will remain as they are, along with any of their current tenants that wish to remain.

DHS owner Joe Gillis has remarked that “In the past year, Allegro Family Clinic in New Hope has more than doubled its patient volume. Expanding this successful model to North Columbus with the addition of a pediatric specialty practice and full-service pharmacy positions us to help meet the health care needs of the broader Columbus and Lowndes County communities.”

The 76th Annual Columbus Spring Pilgrimage Is in Full Swing!

The Spring Pilgrimage has begun! It will last from March 28 through April 9 of 2016.

The long-running celebration of local culture and Antebellum homes will include these activities and more:

  • Historic home tours, some including actors in period dress
  • Catfish in the Alley & Artisan’s Alley on Saturday, April 2
  • Chanticleer male chorus concert on Sunday, April 3
  • Collonade Garden Party on Saturday, April 9
  • Tales From the Crypt cemetery tours and activities on March 30 and April 1, 4, 6, and 8

Catfish Alley Improvements On the Way

Work has recently begun on the alley between Catfish Alley and the CVB. The project is anticipated to cost $200,000, and should be done by September; the City is paying $10,000 towards the costs, the CVB has paid another $30,000, and MDOT will cover the remainder via a grant. The plan is to allow the area to properly connect Main Street to College St & Catfish Alley, with lighting improvements, landscaping, and the like, as well as an expansion of retail and festival space.

Musselwhite’s New Location Is a Cut Above the Rest

MUW’s Borsig Holds Forth on Plans for the Future

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) –

The Mississippi University for Women is seeking new funding from the State in order to improve its already-noteworthy academic programs even further, according to MUW President Jim Borsig. Enrollment at the school is up over last Spring’s numbers, and Borsig has been stumping at the Capitol quite often to see what can be done to find some extra money in the state’s already-squeezed budget to help out. Among other projects, renovation of the Demonstration School , expansions to the nursing and speech pathology programs, and a new culinary arts building are planned; the W is also searching for a new Athlesic Director, from the pool of over forty applicants thus far.

Nammo Talley Ammo Has Lowndes In Its Sights

Jackson, Mississippi — March 8, 2016

LogoNammo154pxNammo Talley munitions manufacturer announced today that they have been awarded a five-year, $97.2 million contract which will create 12 new jobs in Crawford, Mississippi, for the production of ammunition for the Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon system. Their local facility was designed for the assembly and storage of SMAW munitions and similar products. This contract will allow for the re-opening of the facility, which was temporarily closed down in 2014.

“This is a huge win for our program team and for our operation in Mississippi,” said Jim Mullis, general manager of Nammo Talley’s Mississippi operations. “We have received outstanding support from the Mississippi Development Authority, Golden Triangle Development LINK, East Mississippi Community College Workforce Training and the Mississippi Department of Employment Security in re-establishing our operations here.”

Restaurant news in Columbus — Parkside Diner, New & Improved Burger King Coming Very Soon!

 

William Browning of the Commercial Dispatch brings news to tantalize your tastebuds:

Danny and Wendy Cameron, who once ran the Front Door/Back Door in downtown Columbus have announced their latest venture: Parkside Diner. It will be located at 2625 Main St, in the old Shipley’s Donuts building across from Probst Park, and is expected to open its doors as soon as the end of the month; possibly in early April. The venue is designed to evoke the look and feel of a 50’s-style diner, complete with a jukebox, 45’s on the counter, and – eventually – real rootbeer floats and milkshakes.

They will offer soups, salads, and sandwiches as their primary fare, with Mennonite-baked bread delivered fresh every morning. A breakfast menu is in the works, as well. At first, they plan to be open from Tuesday through Saturday each week, from 10 AM to 3 PM each day, with a small staff.

On the fast food front:

The Burger King at 119 AlabamaBurger_King St near the Food Giant is currently undergoing extensive renovations –It is expected to reopen in about a week, on March 12, with a brand-new, expanded kitchen, totally re-done dining room, and a modernized exterior.

In addition, a new Burger King will be opening at 604 18th Ave, next to the Cracker Barrel. It is expected to open in mid-June, and will employ 30-40 local workers. It will be built at the former location of Smith’s Landscaping, which has moved into the old Barnhill’s building just down the street, and is open for business as we speak!

Columbus Hosts State Tourism Conference

The Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau snagged a big one this week, hosting the state tourism association’s spring conference. It’s always good to have a few hundred high-energy PR type people in our area – especially when they are cheerleaders for our state. The group will get to see first-hand how strong downtown Columbus is, and the exponential growth we have seen in the Golden Triangle in general over the last ten years.

Kudos for the CVB for getting them here…I’m sure all of our local businesses are grateful.

The conference – which runs through today – is one of the largest gatherings of tourism professionals in the state; it will bring more than 200 attendees to the city, according to a press release.

Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Nancy Carpenter told The Dispatch Monday that she’s attempted for several years to convince the MTA to bring the conference here: “This is a tremendous opportunity,” she said. “We’ve worked hard to make sure the town looks great, and it always does…We’re very proud of our city and very supportive.” Carpenter also said that the group holds major conferences in the fall and in the spring in various cities statewide.

“We are thrilled to host our spring conference in Columbus, and we encourage tourism industry leaders and professionals from around the state to join us …We know that gathering as an industry is an excellent way to expand our knowledge and connect with fellow professionals in the industry.”

Carpenter commented that the conference provides a great way for new visitors, in particular, to learn more about Columbus, including international visitors.
